The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office on Thursday (Jan. 7) secured a first-degree rape indictment against a man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl left sometimes in his care in New Orleans East.

Sam Jackson was charged with first-degree rape in the single-count indictment handed up by an Orleans Parish grand jury. Jackson, 30, faces a mandatory lifetime prison sentence if convicted of the charge.

According to New Orleans police sex crimes detectives, the victim disclosed to her mother that she had been subjected to a series of sexual assaults from Jackson between May 2019 and May 2020. The child victim said she had been forced to engage in oral copulation by Jackson during several instances where he was babysitting.

Some of the incidents took place inside a residence in the 7000 block of Lawrence Road, the victim told detectives. Another took place at a public laundromat, according to her account.

Jackson has remained jailed at the Orleans Justice Center since his arrest on Sept. 25, 2020. His bond was set at $76,000.

Assistant District Attorney Alicia Bennette presented the case to the grand jury.
