District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office on Thursday (May 16) secured a murder indictment against a man accused of fatally shooting another man behind an Algiers apartment building in January.

Michael Roberts Jr., 27, is charged with the second-degree murder of 29-year-old Lawrence Varnado and with obstructing justice in a homicide investigation in the two-count indictment handed up by an Orleans Parish grand jury. Roberts faces a mandatory lifetime prison sentence if convicted of the murder.

New Orleans police said they responded to a call of shots fired in the 1100 block of Verret Street around 12:45 p.m. on the Sunday afternoon of Jan. 27, 2019. They arrived to find Varnado in the backyard, slain by several gunshots to the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses identified Roberts as the shooter, as both he and the victim lived in the apartment building. Roberts was arrested less than 24 hours after the shooting.

Assistant District Attorney Abigail MacDonald presented the case to the grand jury.
