District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office on Monday (Aug. 12) secured the guilty plea of a Little Woods man who sexually assaulted two juveniles over a period of several years.

Ricky Hookfin, also known as Rickey Hookfin, averted a trial scheduled for Sept. 16 when he entered into a plea agreement before Criminal District Judge Franz Zibilich that saw him sentenced to 18 years in state prison, followed by mandatory registration as a sex offender.

Hookfin, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree rape (one count was amended from first-degree rape), and to single counts of sexual battery, indecent behavior with a juvenile under age 17, sexual battery with a juvenile under age 13, and indecent behavior with a juvenile under 13.

Hookfin’s victims included a girl he began molesting over a six-year period starting when she was 9, and a young boy he began victimizing when the child was 3. The sexual abuse occurred in several houses located in New Orleans East. The first victim, now an adult, and the family of the second victim approved the plea agreement.

“These are the kinds of cases that keep you up at night,” Cannizzaro said. “For someone to victimize an innocent child to whom he has regular access over a period of years, and then to violate trust again by starting the cycle anew with another child, is simply deplorable. I commend the courage of the older victim in coming forward when she realized it was happening again to someone else.

“With this agreement, we were able to spare both victims the further trauma of a trial, while also ensuring this defendant won’t harm any other children while serving a significant prison sentence.”

Assistant District Attorney Daniel Smart prosecuted the case.
