District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office on Thursday (April 18) secured the guilty plea of a Central City man who raped two young brothers in a New Orleans East house in 2016.

Wallace Burton, 65, pleaded guilty to two amended counts of second-degree rape and was sentenced to 20 years in state prison as a double felony offender, under terms of a plea agreement approved by the boys’ mother and Criminal District Judge Darryl Derbigny.

According to New Orleans police investigators, Burton was invited to visit the mother and her sons at the house on Sept. 2, 2016. After their mother fell asleep, Burton took the boys, who were 9 and 7 at the time, into a bathroom.

The mother awoke and confronted Burton, who explained he had been teaching the boys to shave. The mother told police she saw no shaving tools, but did see one of her sons’ pants unzipped. The boys initially denied that anything unusual had occurred, but later told their mother Burton had warned them “they would get in trouble if they had told.”

The boys were examined at New Orleans’ Children’s Hospital, and disclosed the sexual assaults in separate forensic interviews.

Burton already was a registered sex offender in Louisiana, following a 1994 conviction for child molestation.

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Dawkins prosecuted the case.
