District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office on Monday (Oct. 28) announced it has secured an indictment charging an Algiers couple with murder in the death of the woman’s toddler daughter.

Tyrell Reddix, 27, and Shawnise Sherman, 24, each are charged with the second-degree murder of 21-month-old Brooke Sherman and with cruelty to a juvenile in the indictment handed up Oct. 24 by an Orleans Parish grand jury. They face a mandatory lifetime prison sentence if convicted of the murder charge.

Announcement of the indictment was withheld until Monday to allow law enforcement officers the opportunity to safely apprehend the couple. Reddix and Sherman were arrested Monday morning and booked into the Orleans Justice Center jail. Criminal District Judge Karen Herman set bond for each defendant at $1 million last week after the indictment was read.

New Orleans EMS and police responded to a 911 call at 3:42 a.m. on May 8, 2019, reporting an unresponsive child at the couple’s home in the 1000 block of Newton Street.

First responders noted the young girl was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest, with numerous facial and body bruises visible. The child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a hospital.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s office ruled the child’s death a homicide from multiple blunt-force trauma in August 2019. Assistant District Attorney Inga Petrovich presented the case to the grand jury.
